Monochromatic looks are popular for house exteriors at present, and they also make for plenty of drama in the kitchen. This one, in a contemporary Tauranga townhouse, replaces a kitchen that was only 10 to 15 years old, but was poorly designed, says Chelsey Mathieson of Niche Design. “It was a U-shaped kitchen than didn’t work for the family at all,” the designer says. “The spatial planning wasn’t right for the family. They love to socialise and have teenage kids, so it’s a very busy house. But everything was congested on one bench, and there was hardly any storage.”
