Food writer Suresh Doss, in conversation with CBC
Metro Morning host Ismaila Alfa, has some interesting new ideas to share for Lunar New Year dining.
Suresh Doss: Around this time every year I get a lot of requests from listeners asking for Lunar New Year recommendations. In the past, I would join my friends who observe the holiday. We would head up to Richmond Hill for large multi-course feasts or we would go to downtown Chinatown for some Dimsum. But this year, the question is; how can you bring that home?
1 tbsp white peppercorns , crushed 2 tbsp green Sichuan peppercorn , crushed fish sauce , to taste 454 g cherrystone clams , or quahogs, or your preferred crustaceans
Instructions
Pour cold water over chicken and fish bones in a tall stockpot. Bring to a boil over high. Skim off froth that floats with a ladle as the broth heats.
Once most of the froth is skimmed off, add remaining ingredients (except fish sauce, sauerkraut and clams) to pot. Reduce heat and simmer until reduced by half, 45 min to 1 hr.
Strain through a fine-mesh sieve. Season with salt, fish sauce and more Sichuan pepper to taste. Add sauerkraut and bring back to a boil.

Hot pot has always been at the centre of my Taiwanese family’s winter solstice, Lunar New Year and birthday celebrations. It’s a special meal filled with loud chatter and laughter, and its communal nature is a metaphor for family wholeness, as people gather at the table. While hot pot restaurants across the country have put things on pause due to the pandemic, hot pot can be a cinch and just as fun to have at home.

Lunar New Year lands on February 12 this year, and 2021 is the year of the Ox a creature that represents hard work, positivity and honesty. It’s safe to say most everyone has been working pretty hard these past 11 months already, but in all honesty (see what we did there?) a little positivity never hurts. And here’s one thing to be positive about: thanks to Toronto’s hard-working chefs and restaurateurs, it’s still possible to celebrate holidays with special festive feasts even if you have to eat them at home.

grilled cheese
10 Suzanne Barr (of the excellent but now-closed True True Diner) has always loved food a trait she inherited from her mom. Eunice Adassa Barr was an excellent cook, and while her daughter now remembers her Jamaican food most fondly, when Suzanne was a kid she loved her mom’s straight-up, no-frills grilled cheeses. She jazzes up her own sandwich a bit with tomatoes and mushrooms.
