Walmart introduces app to help workers ANNE D INNOCENZIO | Associated Press NEW YORK – Walmart is coming out with a new app for its store workers phones that allows them to do a variety of tasks from digitally clocking into work to helping locate merchandise and answering customers questions. It also has a push-to-talk feature to let them communicate directly with colleagues. As part of the launch, the country s largest private employer and largest retailer says it plans to offer more than 740,000 store workers a new Samsung smartphone for free by year-end. That s nearly half of its total U.S. workforce, according to Drew Holler, senior vice president of people operations.

Retailer partners with Samsung to provide 740,000 smartphones to associates for work, personal use Walmart this week introduced [email protected], the retail giant’s new app for U.S. store associates that provides an exclusive destination filled with new features to simplify daily tasks, serve customers and plan for life outside of work. “The capabilities within the [email protected] app are built in-house by our product, technology and design teams and apply best-in-class technology, like machine learning, augmented reality, camera vision and artificial intelligence to tackle complex problems,” said Drew Holler, senior vice president, Walmart U.S. People Operations, and Kellie Romack, vice president, Product and Associate Experience, in a blog post Thursday.

Dive Brief: Walmart announced Thursday it s launching [email protected], a new workplace app that allows associates to schedule shifts, clock in, troubleshoot daily tasks and, eventually, replenish products more efficiently. As part of the rollout, Walmart plans to offer new Samsung Galaxy smartphones, along with a case and protection plan, to more than 740,000 of its almost 1.6 million U.S. workers by the end of the year, free of charge. Associates can only use the new app s tools while working but will be able to use the device for personal use. In a blog post, Drew Holler, Walmart s senior vice president of people operations and Kellie Romack, vice president of product and associate experience, said the move reflects retail s rapid evolution and the need to retain and satisfy associates.
