Halston Boss on Iconic Fashion Designer as First Influencer and Creating a Redemption Story

To writer, producer and director Daniel Minahan, fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick, known as Halston, was the “first influencer.”
“He’s somebody who really succeeded on marketing and branding himself,” Minahan says, adding that his mark is still left on “our everyday lives and culture” today.

The subject of Minahan’s five-episode limited series, aptly titled “Halston” and bowing May 14 on Netflix, first became known as a hat designer, eventually working for Bergdorf Goodman and designing the pillbox hat Jacqueline Kennedy wore when her husband John F. Kennedy was sworn in as president. But later in that decade he expanded into women’s clothing in general, becoming known for luxurious looks before expanding again the following decade into uniforms and fragrances. He might be roaring back to TV screens thanks to the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, but Ewan McGregor is hardly a stranger to them. For
Halston, the new Netflix miniseries, he s playing the controversial real life fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick.
Halston follows the legendary designer as he leverages his single, invented name into a worldwide fashion empire synonymous to this day with luxury, sex, status and fame, literally defining the era he lives in, 1970’s and ‘80’s New York until a hostile takeover forces him to battle for control of his most precious asset: the name Halston itself.
The first trailer for
Halston truly lives up to the promise of its casting: Ewan McGregor really is the perfect choice to play the mononymous fashion designer who rose to prominence in the ’70s and ’80s. Not to jump the gun based on a simple (but very well done) trailer, but it does sort of feel like McGregor’s career has laid the groundwork for this role the black turtleneck, the self-indulgence, the queerness, the camp, the
drama of it all. We caught a glimpse of McGregor’s Halston in a teaser released last February (in those fabled Before Times), but Netflix has finally unveiled a full trailer for the miniseries, which arrives on May 14:
