USD’s track and field teams competed and won multiple events on both the men’s and women’s side in the Sioux City Relays Friday held at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
The Coyote women’s team won 11 events while the men’s team won seven. USD senior Zack Anderson and redshirt-junior Holly Gerberding were awarded the meets MVP honors.
Anderson won the high jump event and set a new Sioux City Relays record after clearing a height of 7 feet ¼ inch. This meet record comes just one week after Anderson cleared the Olympic qualifying standard of 7 feet 5 inches in the South Dakota Challenge.
The Coyotes recorded a second and third place finish at the Indoor Track Summit League Championships Saturday and Sunday.
On the women’s side freshman sprinter Sara Reifenrath led the way capturing two individual titles and one relay title. She also broke two school records and was named the league’s Newcomer of the Championship.
Reifenrath brought home the gold in the 200 meters, 400 meters and 4×400 meter relay. Her times of 23.73 in the 200 and 53.55 in the 400 are new USD school records.
“I think I knew i could do it. It was just cool to be able to go out there and just do my best and push myself.” Reifenrath said.
Two DakotaDome records fell during Saturday’s Dakota Realty Invitational Saturday in Vermillion.
Sophomore Brithton Senior and Coyote alum Chris Nilsen broke their coaches DakotaDome records in their respective competitions. Senior broke the 60-meter hurdles record by logging a 7.90 second time. Nilsen vaulted 19-4.25, breaking the record by nearly two inches.
Gen Hirata set a new personal best in the pole vault at 14-1.25. She is one of four Coyote women to vault over 14 feet indoors. Ethan Bray won the mens competition at 17-11.
Freshman Sara Reifenrath won three events (two individual and one relay) Saturday. Reifenrath won the 400-meter, 200-meter and anchored the 4X400-meter relay. Reifenrath is the Summit League leader in both the 400 and 200.
