NPS moving to optional, but recommended masking starting Thursday night

Emma Keith / The Transcript Norman Public Schools will end its mask mandate late Thursday afternoon, making masking optional, though “strongly recommended,” at high school graduations, summer school and, for now, the fall semester. NPS’ Board of Education voted 4-1 Monday to move to optional but recommended masking for students, teachers and staff at the end of this week. The district’s mask mandate, in place since the start of the school year, ends as school lets out for the summer Thursday, in time for Norman High’s 7 p.m. Thursday commencement and Norman North’s 7 p.m. Friday ceremony.

Springville ends season in 2nd round, Gardendale sweeps

By Erik Harris, sports editor SPRINGVILLE Baseball season has come to an end in Springville following a pair of losses to Gardendale on Friday in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. The Rockets swept the road set 6-3 and 6-2 to advance into the state quarterfinals for the second straight season (no postseason play was allowed in 2020 due to COVID-19).  Gardendale awaits the winner of No. 3 Cullman vs. No. 7 Chelsea next week in the third round. Those two will play a decisive Game 3 on Saturday after splitting Friday’s doubleheader. Springville (22-13) ends its first season in Class 6A as the Area 13 runner-up. The Tigers also notched a first-round sweep at Fort Payne last Friday and were winners in nine of their last 11 games going into the Gardendale series.
