In pre-Islamic Arabia, there was little respect for women and the poor. Among clans there was no concept of a state or a central political authority. Idolatry, depravity and slavery were the order of the day. Beyond the Arabian Peninsula, there was a bipolar world order with the Roman and Persian Empires pitted against each other.
Amid this chaos, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was born in Mecca in 571 AD. He was born posthumously to Abdullah (RA), a highly respectable merchant from the Hashemite clan who left for the heavenly abode at the young age of 24.
The Holy Prophet’s mother, Amina (RA), noticed something extraordinary about her son right as soon as he was born. He spent 40 years in Mecca and everybody saw that both his habits and character were exemplary. It was at this age that the proclamation of Prophethood was revealed by Allah.
One key, but often forgotten, player in Arabia at that time was the kingdom of Himyar. Himyar was established around the 2nd century AD, and by the 4th century had become a regional power. Based in today’s Yemen, Himyar had conquered neighboring states, including the ancient kingdom of Sheba (whose queen met with Solomon).

What kind of Judaism in Arabia? ” Christian Robin, a French epigraphist and historian who also a leader of the expedition at Bir Hima, says most scholars now agree that, around 380 AD, the elites of the kingdom of Himyar converted to Judaism.
Nietzsche has been described as the poet laureate of the troubled psyche based on his bouts of deep depression and other psychological complaints. Like Nietzsche, DMX also experienced mental health problems. The rapper suffered from bipolar disorder, a condition characterised by episodes of mania (extreme highs) and depression. Some people can even cycle rapidly between both states, like mood swings on steroids.
Beyond Nietzsche and DMX there is a very long list of poets, painters and notable creatives who have also experienced the pendulum of extreme mood states. Is there a link between extraordinary creativity and specific mental health problems? And if there is, might this not alter our tendency to stigmatise those who experience such conditions?
