Naval Air: Israeli Upgrades

March 12, 2021: Israel is introducing a new, larger helicopter to operate from its new Saar 6 corvettes. The American SH-60 Seahawk will complement and eventually replace a smaller French helicopter. Since the late 1990s, the Israeli navy has maintained a squadron of French AS 565 naval helicopters. These were based on land and used to support warships at sea. The only Israeli warship the 4.3 ton AS 565 could land on were the three 1,075-ton Saar 5 ships. Israel obtained the Saar 5s in the early 1990s and while these ships had a helicopter landing pad, there was no hangar so that a helicopter could be carried and used regularly. The Saar 6 was deliberately made two meters longer than originally planned to accommodate a hangar and the 10.4-ton SH-60.

America s Tank-Killer: How the Javelin Missile Came Into Existence

Washington has long worked to provide good anti-tank weapon for its troops. Here s What You Need to Know: The Javelin has been a major success worldwide. In the 1970s, the United States produced what might be considered one of the worst anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) of all time. The M47 Dragon was slow, quirky and took forever to reach its target. But less than twenty-five years later, the United States produced one of the best anti-tank missiles in the world, the Javelin. How did the United States manage to turn around its infantry anti-tank program so quickly? Infantry anti-tank weapons were a relatively weak area of the U.S. military throughout most of the Cold War. While the BGM-71 TOW was an excellent vehicle-mounted ATGM for its time, it was not readily infantry-mobile. The tripod, launch unit, and sight for the TOW weigh in at more than 200 pounds.

Armor: Thai Spikes

February 4, 2021: In 2020 Thailand became the 35th export customer for the Israeli Spike ATGM (Anti-tank-guided missile). Spike is a family of five ATGMs (SR, MR, LR2, ER2, NLOS) using similar technology but varying with regards to weight, range and warhead size. Thailand purchased the first, and most popular version, Spike MR. Entering service in 1997, the Spike MR missile, with the container it is stored and fired from, weighs 14 kg (30.8 pounds), while the CLU (command launch unit), which includes a thermal sight and battery, weighs 12.8 kg (28.3 pounds). Spike MR has a range of 2,500 meters and is fire and forget (once you have the target vehicle in the CLU crosshairs, press a button and once fired the missile will go after the target vehicle, even if it moves). Since the late 1990s Spike systems have become the standard ATGM for Israeli forces, as well as 19 NATO nations. Over 33,000 Spike missiles have been built since the late 1990s and

U S Army Gets a Look at Israel s SPIKE SR Anti-tank Missile

U.S. Army Gets a Look at Israel’s SPIKE SR Anti-tank Missile The U.S. Army is also looking at dozens of items for the future battlefield, including Israel s Spike SR short-range anti-tank missile. The U.S. Army is looking for new technologies and increasing lethality for the future battlefield. As it is assessing advanced technologies it got a look at Israel’s Spike SR, a short-range anti-tank missile from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. “As a portable, electro-optical guided missile, designed for today s modern infantry, Spike SR is especially well-suited to enhance soldier lethality, one of the six priorities,” Rafael said. This assessment was the first live-fire demonstration of SPIKE SR on U.S. soil.
