Alserkal Avenue is one of those spots in Dubai that’s always bustling and it’s about to get busier next week as Alserkal Art Week is back from March 22 to 27.
Last year, the event went virtual in an attempt to stem the spread of Covid-19. This year, Alserkal Art Week is back to a live event with all the safety and precautionary in place and it’s packed with art exhibitions, commissions and talks.

Terence Trouillot In February, an exhibition titled ‘Goodbye, World’, curated by Andreas Templin and Raimar Stange, was installed on an ice floe near the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. Centred on environmental disaster, the show – featuring works by Jonathan Monk, Olaf Nicolai and Martha Rosler, among others – made me think of how COVID-19 has prompted a focus in the arts on the cataclysmic end of civilization. Accessible exclusively online, the exhibition is both tongue-in-cheek and allegorical, suggesting that all artworks will cease to exist in the future.

Purushothaman Sathish Kumar’s work is predominantly colour photographs, though he has shot a few black and whites. One could say he follows the old style of ‘slow photography’ taking the time to document his lived reality in a semi auto-biographical style. Some of his early frames are even shot on film and have that retro, grainy quality that has almost vanished in our age of digital, Instagram-able, immediate photo life.
