As details emerge about major Vermont data breach, governor’s office steps in

MONTPELIER Vermont Gov. Phil Scott stepped into the widening information void formed by a huge state Department of Labor data breach on Wednesday, appointing a deputy commissioner to the department and deploying a team to help with the immediate response.
Scott also asked the state auditor, Doug Hoffer, to audit the department to find out how the error occurred and identify long-term quality improvements.
Meanwhile, state lawmakers and the labor department itself are discussing an investigation of the mistakes that led to the release of personal information on misprinted 1099-G tax forms, including Social Security numbers.

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Labor is still in the process of sorting out an error in the printing and mailing of some 55,000 1099-G forms. Some of the forms were sent to the wrong address, thus potentially exposing personal information, including Social Security numbers.
Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington is urging that recipients not open the 1099 letters and to keep them safe. He wants all 1099s to be returned and all those who were mailed 1099s will be issued a self-addressed stamped envelope in which to return them.
Some recipients may have received more than one 1099 because of the nature of the new pandemic benefits issued by the state and federal governments last year. None of the Regular UI 1099s have been issued.

One recipient was told they did not qualify to speak to a supervisor, and was later told no supervisor was available to take questions.

Dawn Gleason estimates she s called the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development s unemployment call center between nine and 12 times since late December.
Gleason, a single mother in Franklin who had breast cancer last year,
lost her job as the manager of a limousine dispatch service in March. She was relying on unemployment insurance to get by until those benefits ran out in December.
The federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and its Illinois counterpart, the Illinois Earned Income Credit (EIC) could bring bigger returns for eligible filers in the state. But you ll need to claim it on your tax return in order to get it.
The Illinois Department of Revenue issued a reminder to residents that the credits are powerful tools that reward low- and moderate-income taxpayers for their hard work, yet thousands of eligible taxpayers fail to claim this refundable credit on their taxes.
“I encourage taxpayers to check their eligibility for the state EIC and federal EITC,” David Harris, director for the Illinois Department of Revenue, said in a statement. “The earned income credit puts thousands of dollars in the pockets of hard-working families every year. Even if an individual does not owe any tax, they may be eligible. That’s money that can be used for groceries, rent, utilities and other bills.”

by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Labor is aware of a mailing and printing process error that impacts 1099-G tax documents that were mailed on Friday and Saturday (January 29 – 30).
If you received a 1099 from the Department of Labor, they are asking that you DO NOT OPEN IT. VDOL will send you a self-addressed stamped envelope in which to return it. VDOL suspects a printing error resulted in some people getting someone s else s information. This could have occurred even if the address information appears correct.
If you have already opened the 1099-G, please put it in a secure place and wait for the SASE in order to return it (them). Do not discard or destroy it. A new 1099-G will be issued.
