100 years on: partition of Ireland explained

University of Rochester University of Rochester historian Stewart Weaver explains the causes and consequences of the partition of Ireland in 1921. The year 2021 marks 100 years since the Government of the United Kingdom and Ireland divided the Emerald Isle into two self-governing political entities-Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland-under the Government of Ireland Act. What was intended as a temporary solution in the face of unrest, violence, and rebellion is still in effect a century later, as Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Michale Fee appointed head of the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences

Share Michale Fee, the Glen V. and Phyllis F. Dorflinger Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, has been named as the new head of the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), effective May 1. Fee, who also is an investigator in the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, succeeds James DiCarlo, the Peter de Florez Professor of Neuroscience, who announced in December that he was stepping down to become director of the MIT Quest for Intelligence. “I want to thank Jim for his impressive work over the last nine years as head,” says Fee. “I know firsthand from my time as associate department head that BCS is in good shape and on a steady course. Jim has set a standard of transparent and collaborative leadership, which is a solid foundation for making our community stronger on all fronts.”

May 5, 2021 The Washington State University Division of Academic Engagement and Student Achievement (DAESA) celebrated faculty, staff, and students whose contributions throughout academic year 2020-21 promoted student, teaching, and learning success and excellence university wide. University Common Requirements (UCORE) The Richard G. Law Excellence Award for Undergraduate Teaching is presented to Allyson Beall King, scholarly associate professor and associate director of undergraduate programs in the School of the Environment in the College of Arts and Sciences. Allyson Beall King King is commended for having developed and refined an innovative student-centered pedagogy that is process-oriented, collaborative, experiential, and curiosity-driven. The award selection committee noted her attention to issues of belonging, equity, and retention, and that she places top priority on welcoming non-majors into the world of environmental science.
