Three groups of DuPage County women have banded together to provide aid to dozens of asylum-seekers and new immigrants arriving daily in Chicago. Two areas we are concentrating on is attempting to find affordable housing and mentors, said Patricia Motto, 73, of Elmhurst, a retired civil rights lawyer and member of the Interfaith Community for Detained Immigrants board of directors.
The group has been working with Half the Sky of Elmhurst and 6,000 Moms of Wheaton to help stock a storage unit across from Chicago s Greyhound bus station. Its clients are legal asylum-seekers who have been processed at the border and allowed into the United States.
Plane makes emergency landing on interstate near Joliet

A stalled engine forced the pilot of a small aircraft to make an emergency landing Thursday on Interstate 355 near Interstate 80 south of Chicago, according to authorities.
Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Brian McKinney said the pilot and three passengers were aboard the single-engine Beechcraft B24R when it landed on the southbound lanes of I-355 near New Lenox. After the landing, which damaged the aircraft, the pilot and three passengers all complained of minor neck pain and were evaluated by paramedics on scene, McKinney said.
Details about where the flight originated, its ultimate destination or how long it had been in flight were not immediately known.
ROCKFORD Investigations into two recent shootings by Winnebago County Sheriff s Department deputies and a Rockford Police Department officer could take another four to six months to conclude, officials said Thursday.
Detectives from area departments assigned to the Winnebago-Boone County Integrity Task Force are investigating the fatal April 10 shooting of Faustin Guetigo, 27, and the non-fatal April 11 shooting of Jose Gonzalez, 19. Their findings will help Winnebago County State s Attorney J. Hanley determine if the shootings were lawful.
Hanley stressed that information he has released, and videos released by the respective law enforcement agencies, was part of an effort to be as transparent as possible. He said authorities understanding of what occurred could change as more information is revealed.
