Free Zoom program Thursday to explore cultural Kansas food memories

The Capital-Journal Louise Hanson, a retired librarian and researcher who has more than 500 Kansas cookbooks in her collection, will present a free virtual program, Tasting the Past: Exploring Kansas Food Memories,  via Zoom at 7 p.m. Thursday. The public is invited to the presentation, which is being put on by the Topeka Genealogical Society. To receive the Zoom link to view it, email that organization at tgstopeka.president@gmail.com. Hanson s presentation will explore the diverse ethnic food traditions in Kansas, as expressed in community cookbooks over the years. Hanson is part of Humanities Kansas s Movement of Ideas Speakers Bureau, which offers presentations and workshops designed to share stories that inspire, inform, spark conversations and generate insights that strengthen civic engagement.

Free Zoom program to tell about Kansas Cold War missile launch sites

The Capital-Journal Landry Brewer   the author of Cold War Kansas, a book published last August will give a free program via Zoom at 3 p.m. Sunday. The presentation by Brewer, a professor at Southwest Oklahoma State University, will include information about how Topeka s Forbes Air Force Base during the Cold War operated nine intercontinental ballistic missile launch sites, located in a ring of sorts around the base. Sunday’s event will be the latest in a series of virtual presentations being hosted by the county historical society.
