(WMTV) - Summer travel continues to rebound in Wisconsin, as more people feel comfortable leaving their homes and going on a trip amid the pandemic. According to a new AAA survey, 76% of the 400 people who responded in late June, feel more comfortable traveling. That is up from 40% in January. National and state parks topped the list of where people are vacationing, with 31% of respondents saying that is where they took at trip this year. A day outside also remains a top choice for some Madison-area residents, such as Bob Gracia, who stopped to enjoy Governor Nelson State Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Tourism spending in Madison dropped more than 62% in 2020

It’s no secret that the pandemic has caused economic hardships for businesses nationwide, but new data show just how devastating the pandemic has been for Madison’s tourism industry. The data was released by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism on Friday. According to the new data highlighted by Destination Madison, visitor spending in Dane County dropped nearly 43% last year compared to the $1.4 billion the county saw in 2019. In downtown Madison, spending fell from more than $300 million in 2019 to just over $100 million. That’s a drop of more than 62%, which is more than double the state average.

Local hotels create special offers, experiences for Madison Minication

Photo by Patrick Stutz To help Madisonians get out of the house, Destination Madison is launching a “Madison Minication” campaign from Feb. 12 through April 12. According to a news release, 17 hotels are offering packages that include a one-night stay and a curated activity. “With travel limited due to COVID-19, people are seeking a safe and low-stress way to get out of the house during the long winter months,” reads the release. Some of the packages include fish fry at The Edgewater, wine and local eats at Chalet Landhaus, s’mores and cocoa at The Graduate, crafting at Hyatt Place and a private movie theater viewing at Staybridge Suites Madison-Fitchburg.
