So Groundhog Day is the most POPULAR movie where a day repeats itself over and over again. But it s not the only one. One website found 14 more. Here are some of them:
1. 12:01 (1993). A guy gets caught in a time loop in which a woman is murdered, which gives him a chance to save her. It came out the same year as Groundhog Day , but it s based on a short story from 1973.
2. Run Lola Run (1998). A woman goes on a crazy adventure to save her boyfriend, who s in mortal danger after losing a bag of his boss money. The scenario repeats itself several times, but with certain details changing each time.
8 Time Loop Movies To Watch Besides Groundhog Day
Well, it s Groundhog Day. Again. A classic line from a classic movie and a go-to for viewing each year on February. It s an obvious choice and a good one, but what if I told you there are other movies with a Groundhog Day style time loop that might actually be better movies? I m not saying Bill Murray in the 1993 Groundhog Day movie isn t a good movie to watch today, but maybe you need a change of pace or genre this year. I found 14 movies that fit the bill, but I can only personally vouch for eight of them that I have seen, so we ll start with that list first. These won t be in a specific order of favoritism since they each have great qualities and just depend on what style of movie you feel like watching.
Blumhouse Productions’ 2017 Halloween offering has a pretty unbeatable premise:
Groundhog Day crossed with a slasher film, in which co-ed Tree (short for Theresa) is endlessly chased and killed by a psycho with a knife wearing a nightmare-fodder cartoon baby mask on her birthday. Every time she gets murdered, she wakes up on her birthday again.
Happy Death Day refreshes the time loop premise by making the archetype who would usually bite the dust early in the movie that is, the clueless sorority girl self-aware and active in her own fate; as she retains memories of the previous days, she’s able to begin anticipating the killer’s approach to try and evade her own murder. As Tree learns to pay attention to her sorority sisters and the sweet underclassman trying to help her stay alive, as she investigates red herrings and reconciles with estranged family on what is already an emotional bulldozer of a day, she slowly transforms herself into a Final Girl.

When “Groundhog Day” hit theaters in 1993, it marked a turning point not only for star Bill Murray, but also for the cultural significance of the eponymous holiday. It also popularized – if not outright invented – the “time loop comedy,” which has become an especially evocative theme during a global pandemic, when many of us are starting to feel like we’re trapped in our own time loops.
Everyone has either seen this movie or is familiar with the plot through cultural osmosis, but it’s considered customary to explain the plot in these kinds of articles and I am nothing if not a slave to convention. “
