Tencent profit soars, but China watchdogs lurk

And right now that s paying off for Tencent. On Thursday (May 20) the Chinese firm said quarterly profits jumped 65% to just over $7.4 billion. That beat forecasts, driven by a surge in demand for its games at home and abroad. But there s a chill in the air for China s online firms. Regulators have already fined e-commerce titan Alibaba $2.75 billion as part of a sweeping anti-trust clampdown. Last month Reuters reported that Tencent also faces a penalty. Regulators have told it to pay a massive fine, and shed some music assets. Earlier this week its audio streaming unit, Tencent Music, said it faced heightened scrutiny from watchdogs.

Oregon revenue forecast: State coffers and kicker surge

PETER WONG Oregon Capital Bureau For Oregon’s state budget, and for Oregon taxpayers, it appears everything’s coming up roses these days. An economic surge as the coronavirus pandemic wanes will produce $1 billion more for state coffers than state economists projected just three months ago. That will be enough to boost state spending, without cuts, as lawmakers finish work on the state budget for the next two years. Meanwhile, that surge will result in an estimated $1.4 billion — more than twice the amount projected back on Feb. 24 — going back to taxpayers next year in the form of “kicker” credits against their 2021 tax bills. The final figure will be determined in the September economic and revenue forecast, but the share of tax liability is projected at 13.6%.

COMMENTARY: Low wages lend to trouble hiring

We’ve had comments on our Facebook page like, “They need to get off unemployment,” and “No one wants to work,” referencing Gov. Greg Abbott’s recent decision to cut off extra unemployment benefits created during the pandemic. The thing is, people do want to work. A study from economists at Yale University, published on July 14, 2020, found that expansion of the social safety net during the pandemic overall helped families, especially those on unemployment insurance. “We find no evidence that more generous benefits disincentivized work either at the onset of the expansion or as firms looked to return to business over time,” the abstract for the study, published at news.yale.edu states.

Developer moving forward on Royal Crest plans

By Madeline Hughes mhughes@andovertownsman.com May 10, 2021 May 10, 2021 NORTH ANDOVER — A Boston-based firm is taking steps forward to redevelop the 77-acre Royal Crest Estates on Route 114 into a mixed-use property with more housing, retail space, restaurants and a hotel.  It s a very large piece of land and is underutilized, said Jim Keefe, a principal executive at Trinity Financial, the company working on the Royal Crest redevelopment. Trinity Financial has not filed any formal plans with the town, but has been working with town officials on the multi-step process to create a zoning overlay district to allow for the multi-use development. Voters would have to approve the changes to North Andover s zoning at a special Town Meeting in the fall.
