Precise measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic-ray helium nuclei

The dark matter particle explorer has measured high-precision cosmic ray helium energy spectrum

Credit: DAMPE Collaboration Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) Collaboration directly observed a spectral softening of helium nuclei at about 34TeV for the first time. This work was based on measurements data of the helium spectrum with kinetic energies from 70 GeV to 80 TeV (17.5 GeV/n to 20 TeV/n for per nucleon) recorded by the DAMPE. The relevant results were published in Physical Review Letters. Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) offers important ways to deeply understand the astrophysical particle origin and accelerators and the interstellar medium of the Galaxy. Helium nuclei, the second most abundant nuclear element of cosmic rays, is a distinguishing feature of space.

Dark Matter Particle Explorer Reports Most Precise Measurements of Cosmic Ray Proton and Helium Spectra above TeV and Reveals

Date Time Share Dark Matter Particle Explorer Reports Most Precise Measurements of Cosmic Ray Proton and Helium Spectra above TeV and Reveals Chinese Academy of Sciences The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) collaboration reported the precise measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray helium nuclei from 70 GeV to 80 TeV energies on May 18, 2021. For the first time, DAMPE reveals a softening structure at about 34 TeV energies in the helium spectrum with a high significance (~4.3σ). Together with the softening energy of the DAMPE proton spectrum, the results are consistent with a charge-dependent softening energy of protons and helium nuclei. The common softening is likely an imprint of a nearby cosmic ray source, e.g., a supernova remnant. The softening energy, which is likely Z-dependent for protons and helium nuclei, corresponds to the acceleration upper-limit of such a nearby source.

China s dark matter explorer obtains new scientific data

China s dark matter explorer obtains new scientific data Xinhua 20 May 2021, 02:07 GMT+10 NANJING, May 19 (Xinhua) Scientists have publicized the latest scientific outcomes obtained by China s Dark Matter Particle Explorer, nicknamed Wukong or Monkey King, which could shed light on the existence of an unknown source of cosmic rays. Scientists have managed to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic ray helium nuclei using four and half years of data recorded by Wukong, and observed the new structure of the energy spectrum, according to the project team behind the Dark Matter Particle Explorer. This is the third time the important scientific outcomes have been publicized after Wukong precisely measured electron energy spectrum and the energy spectrum of high-energy proton cosmic rays. The new outcomes indicate that China has made significant progress in the detection of high-energy space cosmic rays.
