MISHAWAKA â Mishawakaâs new ice ribbon and cafe-events center at Beutter Parkâs Ironworks Plaza is a step closer to becoming a reality.
City leaders say they knew they were on the right track last month when bids on the project came in at a tad more than $15 million â nearly $5 million less than the $20.5 million estimate. And there were five firms bidding.
With the blessing of the Common Council and Redevelopment Commission, the city signed off on a $50 million stimulus bond issue to pay for the ice ribbon project and nearly a dozen other planned construction projects this week. The council on Monday gave its approval and on Tuesday, the redevelopment authority signed off.

EDWARDSVILLE Cross-promotions and events involving beer and barbecue in Edwardsville just got easier.
Ryan High and his wife, Laura, bought the local Sugarfire franchise in the Ironworks development. They closed the deal on Nov. 1. The Highs own the adjacent Global Brew; an outdoor patio separates the two. Sugarfire has 4,500-square-feet and employs 20 people.
“We want to hone in on the local ownership aspect,” High said. Customers should expect to see Sugarfire 618 taglines, for example. “When the opportunity came up, we knew we couldn’t let it pass due to the proximity.”
