Negaunee plans to enhance lighting on Iron Ore Heritage Trail

ABC 10/CW5 The Negaunee portion of the Iron Ore Heritage Trail is getting a little brighter. The Negaunee City Council has approved Phase 1 in the City of Negaunee IOHT Lighting Enhancement Project, which will install 13 new lighting fixtures along the trail, along with 3000 feet of underground electrical conduit. “This lighting project means a lot to the community,” said Negaunee City Manager Nate Heffron. “It’s going to open up a lot of opportunities for our residents and visitors alike to be able to take advantage of the trails in different ways they haven’t before, especially when it gets dark.”

Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday signed HB 4469, which appropriates $37.8 million in Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grants to support 76 recreation projects and land purchases throughout Michigan. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board recommended the grants in December. “The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund supports quality outdoor recreation, giving Michiganders the ability to safely enjoy the outdoors and boosting local economies,” Whitmer said in a statement. “This funding is crucial to helping communities utilize their natural resources and make Michigan’s public spaces more accessible and attractive to residents and visitors. I am proud to sign this piece of bipartisan legislation into law and support Michigan’s recreational resources and economy.”

There are three YAC groups in the county, including the Marquette, Negaunee and Ishpeming areas, with members from local middle and high schools. Despite the restrictions and hurdles presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the groups have volunteered on several community projects and continue supporting local nonprofits with grants.
