The city of Erie could spend just shy of $1 million on its plan to bring significant security upgrades to City Hall, which has been shuttered for more than a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
City officials are also exploring whether the city’s $79.1 million allocation of federal American Rescue Plan funding can be used to help pay for the improvements.
Cost estimates developed by city officials with the help of an Ohio-based consultant put a potential price tag of $935,683 on the project, which includes metal detectors, at least three new City Hall security officers and other measures, according to city documents viewed by the Erie Times-News.
Erie Chief Fire Inspector Darren Hart said no one is seeking to snuff out anyone s backyard campfire fun.
Instead, Erie Bureau of Fire officials hope a series of proposed changes to the city s current burning regulations, will promote safety and be more neighbor-friendly, he said.
Among the proposed changes that Hart outlined to members of Erie City Council on Wednesday night include placing a time limit on when recreational fires are permitted. The proposed schedule, if approved, would permit fires between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and between 6 p.m. and midnight Friday through Sunday and on holidays.
