SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) More than 100 Vermont National Guard soldiers will be deploying to multiple locations on Wednesday.
The soldiers are mostly from the 572nd Brigade Engineer Battalion and the 1st Squadron, 172nd Cavalry (Mountain), the Guard said.
They will be going to multiple locations across the U.S. Africa command, the Guard said, but did not specify where.
The deployment is anticipated to last about a year, said Maj. Scott Detweiler, the acting state public affairs officer for the Vermont National Guard.
“These soldiers have been preparing for over a year as part of about 950 Vermont Army National Guard Soldiers deploying across U.S. European, U.S. African and U.S. Central Commands throughout the first half of 2021,” the Guard said in a news release.

9 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry (Mountain), 86th Brigade Infantry Combat Team (Mountain) held a sendoff ceremony Jan. 29 at the Camp Ethan Allen Training Site Parade Field in Jericho, Vermont.
About 350 Soldiers with the Vermont Army National Guard will join about 200 Soldiers from New Hampshire, Connecticut and Colorado and deploy to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility as part of Task Force Avalanche.
“The Soldiers of the Mountain Battalion have worked very hard to prepare for this deployment,” said Maj. Gen. Greg Knight, Vermont National Guard adjutant general. “They are among the best trained Soldiers in the Army National Guard, and have earned this opportunity. Vermonters should be proud of them and their continued service to our state and nation.”
