Fort Hood to unveil Vanessa Guillen gate Monday

An entrance gate to Fort Hood named in the honor of slain soldier Spc. Vanessa Guillen will be unveiled at 1 p.m. Monday in a ceremony that will be streamed live on the III Corps Facebook page. The gate leads to the area of 3rd Cavalry Regiment, the unit Guillen was in, and is located near Killeen’s Rancier Avenue and Fort Hood Street intersection where family and supporters of Guillen gathered to hold protests last year. Members of the Guillen family were involved in the design process and will attend the ceremony that is not open to the public, Fort Hood officials said in a news release.

Army report finds there was confusion over how military helicopters were used during June protests

Army report finds there was confusion over how military helicopters were used during June protests A long-awaited US Army investigation concluded that while the use of military helicopters flying low at potentially dangerous altitudes over protesters in Washington, DC, last June after the death of George Floyd was not prohibited by federal law or policy, there was a “lack of understanding” regarding the “employment and command” of the helicopters. Given the “emergency nature of the environment on the first of June,” and the days leading up to it, the conduct of the military pilots “were considered reasonable,” an army official said during a call Wednesday explaining the report’s findings.

Army investigation expected to reveal why low-flying military helicopters were used in response to DC protests

Army investigation expected to reveal why low-flying military helicopters were used in response to DC protests A long awaited Army fact-finding investigation is expected to shed new light on why military helicopters were authorized to fly at potentially dangerous low altitudes over protesters in Washington, DC, last June after the death of George Floyd, a move that fueled criticism over the broader federal response to unrest in the nation’s capital and contributed to scrutiny that “informed” the service’s preparations ahead of the January 6 attack months later, CNN has learned. The report, which is expected to be released by the Army on Wednesday, will address the internal confusion that led to the flights being authorized without a clear understanding of what was happening at the time, two defense officials told CNN.
