Illogical KiwiSaver rule locks first-home buyers out of the property market

MONIQUE FORD/Stuff Gurdip Singh can t afford to build a house on land he owns in Porirua - and worries he’ll have to rent for the rest of his life. Two Wellington would-be first-home buyers say rules that prevent them from accessing their KiwiSaver funds to get into the property market are illogical and unfair. Gurdip Singh bought a 660 square metre section in Porirua for $250,000 seven years ago, using savings and taking out a loan to complete the purchase. He planned to use money from his KiwiSaver fund to help him pay for building costs. But he’s now discovered he cannot, because ownership of any property – including bare land – can disqualify people from accessing their KiwiSaver funds to purchase a first home.
