Two Vancouver police officers have been disciplined for abuse of authority and using unnecessary force during a wellness check in East Vancouver in 2016 that turned into an all-out brawl.
Podcast hosts and sisters Archieta and Archierose Natividad are using their show Filipino Fridays to call out harmful attitudes in Filipino culture and unite the millennial diaspora.
They envision enforcing Commercial Drive as a commercial high street with a “stop and shop model.”
This would be supported by street design interventions such as reducing the number of road lanes south of East 1st Avenue from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction, but curbside parking spaces would be maintained to support businesses.
The narrowed roadway would allow for expanded sidewalks on both sides of the street.
Other changes to the public realm could potentially include public art and placemaking features, bike racks, Mobi bike share stations, and enhanced east-west bike route connections.
The motion is based on recommendations recently made by the Commercial Drive Business Society (CDBS) on a “pedestrian-first vision,” which includes enhancing crosswalks at all cross-streets, new street furniture and landscaping, and improving east-west bike lanes.

“Both businesses must remain closed during the suspension period. This suspension followed closure orders from Vancouver Coastal Health for failing to comply with (provincial health officer) orders.”
The orders were issued on March 29 and outlaw pubs, restaurants or cafés from serving food or drinks at tables indoors. Businesses with outdoor patio space are allowed to serve patrons outside. All indoor group activity at gyms and indoor church services was also banned. The rules put in place to help bring down an accelerated COVID-19 case count are in place until April 19 and could be extended.
