The Biden administration says vaccine equity is a reality One expert laughed

The Biden administration says vaccine equity is a reality. One expert laughed. Dartunorro Clark © Provided by NBC News When Covid-19 hit Detroit, Bishop Edgar Vann had to close up his sanctuary, the venerable Second Ebenezer Church. His duty became to use his voice to preach not only the word of God but also the gravity of the coronavirus. Vann was enlisted to aid the city s Health Department in February to get hesitant residents, largely African American seniors, vaccinated. The virus, he said, has had a brutal impact on the city, and marrying public heath with worship felt natural. I felt an obligation toward making sure that I would not only reach to my congregation but I would also reach beyond my congregation to a much broader influence that I have in the community, Vann, who has been a pastor at the church for 44 years, said in a phone interview.

Most Ford Field vaccines given to white, suburban residents

In the four weeks that have passed since Ford Field s mass COVID-19 vaccine clinic opened, Detroiters have gotten just 7.3% of the 124,087 shots that have been administered at the site  far fewer than people who live in neighboring counties, all of which are more affluent and whiter than the city. When Ford Field opened in late March as Michigan s first federally operated mass vaccination clinic, health officials lauded it as a way to deliver coronavirus vaccines efficiently and equitably into the arms of people living in parts of the country that have been hardest hit by the virus.  Detroit, the nation s biggest majority Black city, was devastated by the virus, especially in the first three months of the pandemic, when its residents were sickened and died at a far higher rate than other Michiganders.

Duggan announces Detroit walk-in COVID-19 vaccine locations

Appointments are no longer needed to get a vaccine in the city of Detroit, starting Tuesday, Mayor Mike Duggan announced Monday. The move is intended to encourage more people to get the COVID-19 shot, since vaccination rates have dropped throughout the United States, Duggan said. He suspects it is due to publicity about  the Johnson & Johnson vaccine pause. Vaccinations are dropping everywhere, and it s unfortunate here in Detroit, because there s no city that relied less on Johnson & Johnson than Detroit  98% of our vaccines have been Moderna and Pfizer but we re being affected as well. Inside the TCF Center, Farewell Recreation Center, the Northwest Activities Center and the Samaritan Center, walk-ins and appointments are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Deadline Detroit | Detroit widens Covid shots to all residents over 50, adds two Saturday sites for seniors

Share March 17, 2021, 1:53 PM Mayor Mike Duggan on Wednesday afternoon expanded access to Covid vaccinations, announcing at a news conference that any Detroiter 50 or older can schedule an appointment at TCF Center. Until now, residents in that age group needed to also have a chronic medical condition to be eligible.  Appointments for free shots can be made at (313) 230-0505.  Duggan said this probably is the last gradual expansion before April 5, when the state opens vaccine eligibility to anyone over 16. Thirty thousand vaccinations have been given this week, the mayor said, touting the success of the city s program for residents and workers. In a couple weeks, we ll be doing 40,000 a week.
