China Takes Lead in Pressuring Biden to Remove Sanctions on Iran

China Takes Lead in Pressuring Biden to Remove Sanctions on Iran 7 Apr 2021 Iranian state media on Wednesday praised Iran’s 25-year, $400 billion cooperation agreement with China as a “geopolitical game-changer” that positioned Beijing as leader of the effort to drag the United States back into the nuclear deal, even as Iran violates the deal in increasingly brazen ways. Iran’s PressTV quoted “American-Chinese social media activist” Carl Zha scoffing at American media for getting “worked up” about the deal, conservatives portraying it as a failure of the Biden administration’s foreign policy, China hawks worried about a new Axis of Evil taking shape, and Iranian dissidents who see the deal as “somehow Iran selling out to China.”

This article is based on an episode of Presscast, a podcast by Press TV   Very little has been published on the Iran-China agreement and its possible outcome for the region since it was announced last year. How important is this deal? So, we know approximate figure, 400, billion (dollar value of agreement), it’s a pretty big number, and it’s touted as a strategic partnership between China and Iran, where both sides committed to broaden the economic cooperation that both sides already have but increasing investment, increasing cooperation in developing infrastructures. So I think it’s a really big deal because we have all the usual outlets in the mainstream media talking about it or the conservative media in the US are, are taking the stance, oh, you know, like the “Biden’s screwed up. He made Iran and China get together, now they have formed the axis of evil, now we are screwed!” You know it’s a good thing when these people are starting to talk like that.

[ Editor’s Note: The Iran-China deal has been in the pipeline for some time. I had been wondering why China was holding off closing the deal. One possibility is that China could not see Iran being much of a trade partner if the US-JCPOA sanctions remained in place, and hence the Biden negotiations have provided an opening. An economically unleashed Iran is a different matter, something which the Arab ‘princes’, the West and Israel certainly know. Iran could then get its oil back onto the market as a steady foreign exchange conveyor belt, and also continue developing is growing list of domestically produced manufactured goods for diversified exports.
