They have a vision: The city should, very quickly, create a lot of new shelter or housing. Then it should move people off the streets and out of the parks and into that shelter or housing. And it should provide whatever supports, like mental health services and drug treatment, people may need to stay there. Voilà. No more tents.

Alex Garland Last summer, during the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, activist and attorney Nikkita Oliver brought Mayor Jenny Durkan onto the steps of Seattle City Hall in front of a crowd of protesters to ask questions about public safety and policing. Unsatisfied with Durkan s canned responses, the crowd drowned her out with chants of Nikkita for Mayor. But Oliver had no intention of running for mayor or for any public office, really. After placing third in the 2017 mayoral primary, coming in behind Durkan and urban planner Cary Moon, Oliver, the executive director of Creative Justice, focused on making changes from the ground up through community organizing and political education.

Seattle weighs differing approaches to homeless crisis in wake of pandemic A homeless camp in South Lake Union. (Jason Rantz, KTTH) The new CEO of the King County Regional Homeless Authority, Marc Dones, has said that they don’t believe in large congregate shelters, and that they think this is a problem that needs to be solved 10 or 15 people at a time. There appears to be a different approach applied by the Compassion Seattle initiative, which seeks force the city to fund housing for the homeless and clear encampments out of city parks, sidewalks, streets and all other public areas.
