The UK is facing many frightening problems; a nationwide shortage of garden gnomes being one of the issues lower down on the list. Suez Canal container ship the Ever Given which carries cargo between Asia and Europe became blocked last month - and one of the items of cargo that is carried on the super-sized vessel is the garden gnome.
Garden centres are since running out of the favourite outdoor ornament since the blockage and lockdown.
Garden Centre Association chief executive, Iain Wylie, told the BBC: “With goods arriving from abroad, garden centres were affected by the ship getting stuck in the canal as much as any other industry.

It’s a combined thing with garden centres being so busy. I looked at some figures based on March which said garden centres were 97% busier than they were in 2019.” He has been contacting suppliers across Europe and China to help ship garden gnomes to the UK.
