The City of Flagstaff and the Flagstaff Unified School District have been selected by the Children and Nature Network to receive a “Green Schoolyard Grant.” The grant includes technical assistance and funding to support the FUSD open access green schoolyard program. The focus of the grant will be at Killip Elementary School, where the resources will be utilized to enhance learning opportunities for students as the new school is built. Local non-profit Terra BIRDS will be leading the project at Killip, which will ensure the schoolyard meets community needs for stormwater capture, pollinator habitat, vegetable gardening and a space to learn and explore. Flagstaff was one of ten cities selected for the grant. The project will likely kickoff next year.

Nicole Jackson, a natural-born leader, is making a name for herself by changing the face of environmental education through storytelling in parks.
A nature enthusiast, avid bird watcher and Cleveland, Ohio native, Nicole is an alumna of the School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University. There she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Education and Interpretation (2011). She is an environmental educator who has worked for various non-profits implementing programs across for the past decade in Central Ohio focused on conservation, gardening, green jobs, and outdoor recreation. Her main goal as an educator is to help people of color find access to local resources that connect them to fun nature experiences and become environmental stewards. Apalachee Audubon Society presents Fixing to Take Flight: Soaring Above Limits with Nicole Jackson in a virtual presentation this week.
Environmental educator Jackson will highlight the work she is doing to inspire environmental educators and professionals to think outside the box so they can create a more inclusive environment and better connect diverse audiences to the natural world around them.

Texan by Nature (TxN) is a group founded by former First Lady Laura Bush that partners with conservation groups and businesses, acting as an accelerator for conservation groups and a strategic partner for businesses. Their projects and programs include Conservation Wrangler, TxN Certification, Symposia Series, and TxN 20.
