This Gladiator EcoDiesel is one example of the trend. It’s one of several newly-available powertrains available in Jeep’s more hardcore off-roaders, the popular Wrangler, and it’s pickup-truck sibling, the Gladiator. Expanding from a sole gasoline V6 engine at launch just a short while ago, Wrangler shoppers can now additionally choose a turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine, a plug-in hybrid model called 4xe, and the new EcoDiesel V6. In the Gladiator, current engine choices include the 3.6 litre V6 gas engine as standard, and the 3 litre turbodiesel V6 as an optional upgrade.
Just a quick glance at the sticker price tells us this is a highly specialized machine, with a highly specialized engine. The EcoDiesel V6 runs 260 horses and 442 pounds of torque – besting even the Hemi V8 in that specification. The diesel comes with Engine Start Stop, which all but eliminates wasteful idling and saves even more fuel.
