“Hands get similar levels of UV damage from the sun,” explains Richard Torbeck, M.D., assistant professor in dermatology at Mount Sinai in New York City. Plus, he says, since hands have less fat tissue than the face, over time, they can begin to look hollow and winkled. UV exposure can also cause discolorations or spots to appear. The key is starting early, but applying SPF even after spots have appeared can help them fade, research on facial sunscreen shows.
