The devastating effect of open-cast mining, responsible for environmental degradation in the region, has led to depletion of local water resources. Coal’s life cycle, from mining to processing to combustion, requires a large amount of water, thereby affecting the groundwater level.

In a tragic incident, a woman died after after she fell into a river near Kanakunda in Odisha while trying to click a selfie.
The deceased has been identified as Nirupama Prajapati. The incident took place on January 3 near Kanakund, a popular picnic spot in the Sundargarh district of Odisha while Nirpama had gone there for picnic with her friends. She was taking selfies on the riverine rocks when she slipped and fell into the Ib river flowing across the region.

Sundargarh: The fascination for taking selfies has landed many in fatal trouble. The same fate awaited a girl who had gone to Kanakund picnic spot in Sundargarh district. She met a watery grave when she fell into Ib River while clicking selfies Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Renu Prajapati, a resident of Kumbharpada village in Rajgangpur area. After receiving the information, fire personnel reached the spot and launched a search operation. Search was still on to find the body of the deceased at the time of filing this copy.
