Update (0800ET): Six ships that had been stuck behind the Rumford have started to move as this morning s latest traffic trouble in the Suez dissipates. The first vessel, Aframax crude tanker Minerva Nike, heading north through the canal at nearly 12 knots at around noon London time. The Rumford, meanwhile, has entered the Great Bitter Lake.
Update (0700ET): The Italian tanker is now operational and just resumed the Suez Canal Transit. The northbound convoy flow is back to normal, according to an emailed note from Inchcape Shipping Services obtained by Bloomberg.
Little more than a week has passed since the Ever Given was successfully freed from a particularly narrow passage in Egypt s Suez Canal, yet the canal is already struggling with another potential blockage Tuesday.
RIYADH: Ship traffic through Egypt’s Suez Canal was briefly halted Tuesday as the oil tanker Rumford lost power, Bloomberg reported today.
Rumford needed tug boat assistance but was soon operational and the northbound convoy was moving normally again, according to an email from Inchcape Shipping Services.
It comes two weeks after the Ever Given, a giant container ship, wedged itself across the Suez waterway and blocked it, causing massive disruption to global trade.
Around 12 percent of trade passes through the Suez Canal waterway that links Asia to Europe.
Suez Canal Chairman Osama Rabie told Reuters on Tuesday an expansion of the southern section of the waterway was under construction.

Traffic through Egypt’s Suez Canal was briefly halted on Tuesday, just two weeks after a giant container ship ran aground and blocked the waterway that’s vital for global trade.
The oil tanker Rumford needed to be towed by tug boats after experiencing engine problems, but was soon operational and the northbound convoy it was in was moving normally again, according to the Suez Canal Authority and Inchcape Shipping Services. (Note: Behind Rumford was the Greek-flagged crude oil tanker Minerva Nike, which was also stopped briefly before getting underway again.)
There seems to be a slowdown of traffic at the #Suez Canal again, as another ship, the #Rumford, is facing difficulties there.
