The Indian Navy has rescued 146 people on board a barge that went adrift in the Arabia Sea near Mumbai hours before a very severe cyclonic storm with winds gusting up to 185 km per hour made landfall on the Gujarat coast, an official said on Tuesday.
The Navy had deployed three of its frontline warships after receiving messages to rescue 410 people on board two barges off the Mumbai coast on Monday.

Synopsis On receipt of a request for assistance for a barge P305 adrift off Heera oil fields in Bombay high area with 273 personnel onboard, INS Kochi was swiftly sailed with a despatch for search and rescue assistance, Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said.
Cyclone Tauktae: Indian Navy sends ships to rescue two barges with 410 persons on board
The Indian Navy on Monday deployed three of its frontline warships after receiving messages to rescue over 400 people onboard two barges off the Mumbai coast in view of cyclone Tauktae. The ships deployed to extend assistance to the two barges are INS Kolkata, INS Kochi and INS Talwar, Navy officials said.
INS Talwar is the first vessel under the Samudra Setu-II operation which embarked from Bahrain to reach New Mangaluru Port at 1.30pm on Wednesday.
MANGALURU: The New Mangaluru Port Trust (NMPT) handled the first naval vessel INS Talwar, which was carrying 40MT of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) under the Samudra Setu-II operation launched by the Indian Navy.
Upon its arrival, the vessel was given the highest priority berthing in the port, at berth No. 7.
The LMO is donated by the Kingdom of Bahrain to the Indian Red Cross Society, as a token of goodwill to overcome the current pandemic situation.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the Indian Navy has launched Operation Samudra Setu-II to meet the oxygen requirement in the country.
