An increase in funding for Iowa’s “workforce machines” is in the works.
The Iowa Valley Community College (IVCCD) Board of Directors at the meeting Wednesday heard from Association of Community College Trustees (IACCT) Executive Director Emily Shields.
“I’m very passionate about community colleges,” Shields said. “I think they’re the most important part of the higher education sector, especially going into the future.”
The Association of Community College Trustees is a non-profit organization advocating for Iowa’s 15 community colleges, and Shields said her top priority as executive director has been following the current state legislative session.

The Marshalltown City Council set an April 26 public hearing on a development agreement with Glenwood Marshalltown LLC. during a special meeting on Wednesday.
The development will be north of West Merle Hibbs Boulevard and west of South Sixth Street. According to the agreement, Glenwood Marshalltown will construct more than 40 housing units which includes single and multi-family units.
The city would agree to make economic development payments to the Glenwood Marshalltown not to exceed an estimated $1.4 million.
“How this agreement is structured, once the houses get built we will rebate incremental taxes to the developer,” said Jessica Kinser, city administrator.

The Marshall County supervisors appointed Joel Phillips as the new Marshall County Sheriff and Jordan Gaffney as the new Marshall County Attorney during the regular Tuesday meeting. The appointments went into effect immediately. Both positions will be on the November 2022 general election ballot.
The Marshall County Board of Supervisors was busy at the regular Tuesday meeting, even though the meeting was relatively short.
First, they appointed Joel Phillips as the new Marshall County Sheriff, which took effect immediately. He will serve in the role until November 2022 and then will be up for election.
“It was an interesting and good time we had going through the interviews,” Supervisor Bill Patten said. “Joel’s background and his work gives him an edge because he’s done this before. We’re excited to have Joel.”

INDEPENDENCE The funeral will be held Friday morning for Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith, who was killed while trying to arrest a man barricaded in his Grundy Center home.
The patrol and Smith’s family announced a visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Reiff Family Center-Funeral Home and Crematory in Independence. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Independence Community High School.
The public is welcome to attend and masks are required.
Smith, a 27-year-veteran of the patrol, was shot and killed April 9 during a standoff with Michael Thomas Lang, 41. Authorities have charged Lang, who remains hospitalized, with first-degree murder.
