The Big Story: Bengal vendetta
There is near-consensus amongst political analysts that the current Bharatiya Janata Party has a hunger for winning political power that is rarely matched by other parties. Unfortunately, this hunger has, in the past few years, often led to a troubling undermining of democratic norms.
A glimpse of this was seen in West Bengal over the past week as the Union government’s Central Bureau of Investigation suddenly arrested two senior ministers, one MLA and one politician – all from the Trinamool Congress – on May 17.
Bitter campaign
The arrest was the latest incident in months of bitter political conflict between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress as West Bengal went to the polls. The campaign itself raised troubling questions about India’s democracy, with the Election Commission facing serious allegations that it was bending inordinately to the BJP’s demands. Varavara Rao had been in custody since August 28, 2018, awaiting trial.
New Delhi:
Varavara Rao, the 81-year-old poet-activist who has been in jail for over two years in the Koregaon-Bhima case, walked out of the Mumbai s Nanavati Hospital late Saturday after being granted bail for six months by the Bombay High Court on medical grounds last month.
He was undergoing treatment at the hospital where was admitted by the Maharashtra government following the high court s intervention. His lawyer Indira Jaisingh posted a photo of the poet-activist on Twitter.

The Supreme Court of India on a petition filed by a Muslim man has agreed to hear the matter of alleged “Love Jihad” on August 16. The Court has also sought the responses from NIA and Kerala government.

Maharashtra government says Elgar Parishad accused Varavara Rao can be shifted to state-run JJ hospital where he would be taken care of just as well as he is being taken care of at privately-run Nanavati Hospital.
