The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males (CSBM) is accepting nominations for its annual Outstanding Black Leader of Tomorrow Awards. Presented each year at the Black History Month Gala Celebration in February, the awards encourage the development of future leaders and recognize local contributions by young Black Americans. Nominations must be made by Tuesday, February 9, at the CSBM webpage, where there is more information and descriptions of past recipients. (Presentation of this year’s awards will take place at a virtual gala, being held Saturday, February 27, with details to be announced here.)

The City of Bloomington Black History Month Committee is seeking submissions from area students for the 2021 Black History Month Essay Contest. Students from the elementary grades through high school are encouraged to submit original essays on the theme “The Show Goes On” as it pertains to Black history.
The City of Bloomington and the Indiana University Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center are commemorating National Black History Month 2021 with the theme “The Show Goes On.” The month’s events will speak to the role of the arts in the resilience of the Black community; highlighting the way Black stories of the journey to freedom, civil rights, and equity have been represented in music from gospel to blues to rap, as well as other art forms from dance to literature to the visual arts.

The City of Bloomington and the Indiana University Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center invite the community to kick off Black History Month at the 2021 Opening Celebration on January 29. Beginning at 6 p.m., the free, public event will be held over Zoom video conferencing and streamed live on the City’s social media pages. Registration to attend the event over Zoom must be made in advance at go.iu.edu/bhmkickoff.
