The meeting came days after US Vice President Kamala Harris called up Prime Minister Narendra Modi and apprised him about the Biden administration s plans to make COVID-19 vaccines available to India and several other countries.
Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Wednesday held talks with US Charge D Affaires Daniel B Smith focusing on ways to combat the coronavirus pandemic including supply of COVID-19 vaccines. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said regional issues, and cooperation in the United Nations also figured in the productive meeting .
The relationship between India and the United States has intensified in the first 100 days of the Biden administration, a State Department official said.
India is struggling with a second wave of the pandemic with more than 3,00,000 daily new coronavirus cases being reported in the past few days, and hospitals in several states are reeling under a shortage of medical oxygen and beds.

Recent activities along the Line of Actual Control with China have opened India’s eyes to what cooperative effort with others might mean for their own defensive needs, a top Pentagon commander told lawmakers on Tuesday observing that New Delhi, in the very near term, will deepen its engagement with the Quad.
“India has long had an approach called strategic autonomy, you know, a non-ligned approach with others, but I think certainly the activities along the Line of Actual Control with China has opened their eyes to what cooperative effort with others might mean for their own defensive needs,” Admiral Phil Davidson, Commander of US Indo-Pacific Command,told members of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee during a Congressional hearing.
