NEWTON Board of Education members listened to speakers discuss the pros and cons of keeping the district s official mascot, the Newton Brave, for nearly 90 minutes at Tuesday s meeting.
The discussion actually began last school year when a 15-year-old sophomore wrote an essay that asked the district whether or not it should keep the Brave as the high school mascot.
The essay, directed at the school board, was shared with others and the discussions began in and out of the schools.
According to the teen girl s family, the discussion took a nasty turn as she received physical and death threats.

PATERSON With the city in danger of surpassing last year’s record-breaking shooting statistics, two Paterson churches on Saturday, Aug. 7, will be participating in a gun buyback program launched by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.
People will be allowed to turn in as many as three guns with no questions asked and receive as much as $250 for each one, officials said. The state is overseeing similar buyback efforts in Atlantic City, East Orange and Newark on the same day, an initiative touted by Gov. Phil Murphy as a way to improve safety in New Jersey cities plagued by gun violence.
