PETAL, Miss. (WDAM) - More than 40 police canine teams from across the southeast are in Forrest County this weekend to take part in a required certification event, thatâs being hosted for the first time by the Petal School District Police Department.
The Region 26 Narcotics & PD1 Certification for the United States Police K-9 Association began Saturday.
Teams from Mississippi, Georgia and Texas are participating.
âWeâve got one of the bigger trials weâve had in a long time this year,â said Chris Picou, president of Region 26 of the USPCA. âSo, weâve got 30 detector dogs, weâve got another 12 cadaver dogs, so 42 altogether and I think on the patrol part, weâve got 17 or 18 dogs certifying in that event.â

PETAL, Miss. (WDAM) - The Petal School Police Department held its annual âShop with Panther Policeâ on Monday at Walmart in Petal and will continue shopping on Tuesday.
The event is to give underprivileged students in the district an opportunity to fill their shopping carts with school supplies, clothing and toys.
School officers, Petal police, faculty and staff from each of Petalâs schools joined in to help 15 school students along with their parents as they shopped Monday evening while the remaining 15 children will go on their shopping spree on Tuesday evening.
