Johnson City org hopes to attract curated shop downtown

The application, which is available at downtownjc.com/downtownnow, closes on Wednesday. The organization recently received a $50,000 Placemaking Grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development that will support business development in Johnson City. Most of the funding will be dedicated to placing a curated shop on the first floor of one of the large, unused buildings in the downtown core, which will involve having one business owner who subleases space to several smaller vendors. Subletters could include local artists, makers or other retailers. Dianna Cantler, Johnson City Development Authority interim executive director, said subleasing the space will take some of the burden off of the business owner, enabling them to fill a larger space.

Fridays After 5 will bring music back to downtown Johnson City

Live music will soon return to downtown Johnson City. Formerly known as Founders After 5, a rebranded version of the music event called Fridays After 5 will begin this June and run through September, occurring from 6-8 p.m. most Fridays. The event is moving from its traditional home in Founders Park to King Commons Park. Connect Downtown Johnson City, part of the Johnson City Development Authority, is organizing the event. Lindsey Jones, the authority’s marketing manager, said Founders After 5 could get fairly busy, typically seeing an average of 500 to 600 people in attendance each week. “We’re expecting after a year of no fun in 2020 that people are going to be eager to get out, listen to live music again,” Jones said, “so we’re expecting larger crowds than normal.”

Downtown visitors go wild for Wildabout Walkabout scavenger hunt

There’s a new activity in downtown Johnson City that’s sure to make participants of all ages go wild. The “Wildabout Walkabout” scavenger hunt is a permanent activity that features 15 bronze animal sculptures hidden throughout downtown for searchers to find. Clues can be picked up at local businesses or pulled up online, and visitors can get searching. “We realized that in downtown we have an incredible number of restaurants, we have some great breweries, we’re starting to build our retail capacity, but we wanted to look for things, especially that were outdoors, that we could offer for families,” said Dianna Cantler, Johnson City Development Authority interim executive director.
