How we talk about substance abuse has an impact

Stories delivered during a “community conversation” about substance misuse in Hutchinson Friday, June 25th, included those of a mother, a wife and an addicted young father. The panel also featured a lifetime resident who also suffers from mental health disorders and an addiction counselor. And while each one’s experience differed as much as the teller, they carried a uniform message. Addiction is a disease – not a choice – that can devastate the lives of all those it touches, from users to their families. Yet, the way most people, and even institutions, talk about it and those who suffer from it create a stigma that often prevents those sufferers, and their families, from seeking the help that could change – and save – lives.

St Croix/Pierce area program helping people get to work

Regional nonprofit Workforce Resource has a new program for low-income participants facing barriers to employment. Written By: Rebecca C. Mariscal | 7:12 am, Feb. 26, 2021 × Transition Jobs, a new Workforce Resource program, is designed to help employers find quality workers while helping people in western Wisconsin find jobs or new careers. MetroCreative illustration Those in need of employment have a new option for assistance, thanks to nonprofit Workforce Resource. Workforce Resource serves St. Croix and Pierce counties as well as other counties in the region. The organization provides programs to assist individuals with getting back into the workforce. “Our main goal is to help them be successful in getting into some work,” career planner Jackie Schwartz said.
