China s taijiquan, also known as tai chi－a major part of the stunning opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and represented by numerous practitioners worldwide－was added to UNESCO s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on Thursday.

Two new entries from China, Taijiquan and the Wangchuan ceremony, were added to UNESCO s intangible cultural heritage list on Thursday.
Taijiquan, also known as tai chi, is a traditional physical practice characterized by relaxed, circular movements that works in harmony with breath regulation and the cultivation of a righteous and neutral mind.
The two items were added to the list during the 15th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is being held virtually, from Monday until Saturday, and hosted by Jamaica.

Originating during the mid 17th century in Wenxian county in Henan Province in central China, it is now practiced throughout China by people of all ages and by different ethnic groups, according to the official website of Unesco.

Oman s camel races finds place in UNESCO Representative List

Muscat: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has registered camel racing in its list of intangible cultural heritage, following an application submitted by the Sultanate and the United Arab Emirates recently.
A decision to this effect was made by the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage during its 15th meeting held via videoconferencing.
The achievement comes in recognition of the leading role of the Sultanate in documenting elements of Omani culture and as a culmination of efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the Omani National Committee for Education, Culture and Sciences.
