Jess Hardiman 9:08 PM, April 08 2021 GMT+1 Forget the ever-cheerful potato smileys of your youth, as there are two new products to whack in the oven for tea that are guaranteed to give you an even bigger hit of nostalgia - shaped to resemble some of your favourite childhood crisps. Iceland has introduced Space Raiders and Hula Hoops frozen potato shapes, both of which sound like an absolute shout. According to New Foods UK, the Space Raiders shapes will officially be available in stores from 12 April, and come in either Pickled Onion or Beef flavour - although some shoppers appear to have been able to track some down already.

Ocado and KP Snacks detail progress on plastic phase-outs Online retailer Ocado had launched a refresh of its own-range products that will remove more than nine million pieces of packaging while also reducing the amount of plastic used, while KP Snacks has also announced packaging reductions. Both organisations have successfully removed plastics from a range of products Ocado’s product refresh accounts for more than 530 products, ranging from coffees and salads to tinned goods. The refresh will see the removal of nine million non-essential packaging components from Ocado’s own-brand products. Across the range, around 27 tonnes of plastic has been removed, including 640,000 plastic nets. An adhesive label has also been removed on items such as egg boxes, with information now printed directly onto the box, saving around 10 tonnes of paper annually.

KP Snacks Hails Packaging Reductions

17th March 2021 KP Snacks has revealed the large-scale packaging reductions it has made across its product range as it strives to meet its sustainability goals via the company’s ‘Taste for Good’ programme. The major snacks manufacturer has introduced a series of packaging innovations to reduce its environmental impact. These have led to the packaging for its Hula Hoops range being cut by 23% – equal to 11 tonnes of plastic – whilst popchips and Tyrrells packaging are both down by 14%, or the equivalent of 23 and 43 tonnes respectively. KP’s move to cut plastic usage includes further plans for packaging reductions across a number of the brands in its portfolio this year. Investment in new equipment that packs the products in a more efficient way has resulted in a cut of around 142 tonnes of packaging across Nik Naks, Space Raiders and Skips.
