United Way of Western Connecticut has announced that it will be releasing a new round of funding in greater Danbury, the city of Stamford, and greater New Milford. Grants will be awarded to help nonprofits cope with the deluge of needs caused the health and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, while also helping them plan to survive and thrive as we enter a post-pandemic world.
A Request For Proposal (RFP) is being issued on March 1, 2020. Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have been dealing with an increase in demand for the services they provide, with critical services such as housing supports, food, child care, and physical and mental health services receiving priority. Long Beach resident Jennifer Hill was excited last week to see that, as an educator, she would be eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine soon, but when she emailed the city asking for more details and specifying that she is under the age of 65, she was surprised to get appointment registration links in response.

“I was all excited and I clicked the link and made an appointment,” for Jan. 20, said Hill, who works at Compton College. But then she saw on the city’s VaxLB website that educators under the age of 65 aren’t supposed to start getting inoculated until Jan. 25. She spent Tuesday calling and emailing the city’s vaccine hotline, but it was still set to a holiday response. Hill was left contemplating whether to just cancel her appointment.
