Can Cities Be Saved From 'Supergentrification'? Aspen May Offer a Roadmap – Next City

In her new book, “Aspen and the American Dream: How One Town Manages Inequality in the Era of Supergentrification,” Stuber, an associate professor of sociology at the University of North Florida, explores how the Aspen of her childhood has shifted in an era of “supergentrification.” While the city has managed to maintain a working middle class, thanks in large part to an affordable housing program established in the 1970s, progressive political leadership and creative urban planning, moneyed interests threaten to tip the scales in favor of high-end development. In 2016, the City Council announced a complete moratorium on development. Over 10 months, it rewrote the land-use code to favor residents over developers.

JUDITH FEBRUARY: Good news for the ANC is little more than empty promises again

JUDITH FEBRUARY: Good news for the ANC is little more than empty promises again OPINION In Gqeberha on Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa and several ministers in his Cabinet took a tour of Aspen Pharmaceuticals’ sterile facility. It was the moment when a rather big announcement was about to be made: Aspen will now be manufacturing millions of Johnson and Johnson vaccine doses not only for South Africa but for the African Union as well. Of course there is no discernible vaccine plan apart from Ramaphosa saying, I want vaccines now as he ended the tour of the facility. Unfortunately that is not a plan, though governments like nothing better than a good news story - even one in two parts. Part two of this vaccine good news story is that jabs need to get into people’s arms.

In October the Australian Fresh Produce Alliance put forward a plan to quarantine up to 200 seasonal workers a fortnight in Mildura to ease the shortage. Under the proposal Aspen Medicine will run the quarantine facility, costing the state government $9 million to set up and a fee of $2,500 per person in quarantine. Speaking to The Australian, Mr Littleproud accused the Andrews government of refusing to make a decision. Favourite
