Aspen's Kayla Tehrani reflects on being named 3A's swimmer of the year

Photo by Austin Colbert/The Aspen Times Kayla Tehrani is a teenager at the end of the day, and sometimes those characteristics stand out. Other times, notably during swim meets, the Aspen High School junior is a driven, ferocious competitor, a key trait that has turned her into one of the state’s top swimmers. “I’d like to see her consistently work as hard in practice as she does in competition,” AHS girls swim coach Katherine Keel said. “Kayla is one of the most motivated swimmers I’ve ever coached. She’ll complain about warming down or longer distance sets in practice, but it’s more of a shtick, as it’s obvious there is a fire burning inside her to be the best. Any challenge or doubt motivates her even more, and she lights it up when it matters most.”

Aspen city briefs: Feedback critical to Aspen's child care crisis

Feedback critical to Aspen’s child care crisis The city of Aspen Kids First department is asking the community for feedback on child care capacity in Aspen and Pitkin County. For years, the demand for child care has been greater than the number of available spots, especially for infants. The public is invited to go to the Aspen Community Voice website and respond to a survey about child care needs and desires, and offer input on how to best solve the disparity between need and availability. Kids First is asking past, present and future parents and caregivers to weigh in, as well as anyone with an interest on the topic, especially because early childhood education is critical to the health and overall economic recovery of our community, according to a city news release.

With state milestone achieved, 5-Star program can begin in Pitkin County

Staff report Colorado reached a significant vaccination milestone this week that allowed the 5-Star State Certification Program to begin Wednesday, according to a news release from Pitkin County. The program holds local businesses that apply to a higher standard of COVID-19 safety precautions in exchange for allowing them to operate at the next lower color-coded level of restrictions than is currently in place in the county. For example, while Pitkin County currently operates under the Yellow-level restrictions, 5-Star certified businesses are allowed to operate under Blue-level restrictions. Under Yellow restrictions, most businesses were allowed 50% capacity restrictions. Blue restrictions also limit most businesses to 50% capacity, though those limits increase depending on space available, according to state guidelines.
