UPDATE: Hidden art points to playable Sonic and Tails. Updated on 15 June 2021
UPDATE 15/6/21, 11PM: In much the same way that Sonic made a surprise roly-poly appearance in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD, it looks like the blue hedgehog will be making a playable return in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania - and this time with Tails in tow.
One enterprising internet sleuth (as spotted by Sonic fan site Sonic Stadium) has gone a-poking around Sega s newly launched Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania website and - presumably through a combination of curiosity, cunning, and guesswork - uncovered currently hidden art for a potentially playable Sonic and Tails.

Super Monkey Ball fans have had a bit of a rough time lately. In 2019, we saw the release of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD, a remaster of what is widely considered to be the weakest entry in the franchise. Not long after, the publisher appeared to be gauging interest in the future of the series with a Twitter poll. It s all been rather quiet since that flutter of activity, but it appears we may know the name of the next monkey-rolling adventure.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania could well be the title of a new game in the series. Discovered by Gematsu, the game was listed on the Australian Classification Board s website, with the rating approved on 15th April. Interestingly enough, if you try to visit the game s page now, you ll see it s been removed. Curiouser and curiouser.

Twenty years ago, when I first started in the games industry, I was 17 and Grand Theft Auto III was being raked over the coals.
There had been moral panics about video games before (Mortal Kombat and Carmageddon leap to mind), but GTA III being pulled from shelves in Australia was a real awakening for our industry. It had to be re-released in an edited form, and that whole process was not a trifling matter for those of us involved.
In the first few years of my career, working in PR at Rockstar Games, the hits kept on coming. I was submitting games for classification during the time when an edited version of Vice City released, Manhunt was yanked from store shelves, and a nice warm cup-o-joe became all the rage.
