Patent images of the 2021 Nissan Note have surfaced on the Australian Intellectual Property database, potentially indicating plans for a local launch in the near future.
Nissan doesn’t currently offer a compact car in the shrinking light car market segment in Australia. In fact, the most affordable model it sells here is the Juke, which starts from $27,990. That obviously means Nissan is missing out on a portion of the market.
So far this year (through June) the ‘Light below $25k’ class (Toyota Yaris, Mazda2) has reported 24,044 sales, according to VFACTS new vehicle registration figures. That’s up 33.1 per cent on the same period last year. The pandemic is likely influencing the increase, however, looking at the same six month period in 2019 shows 34,188 vehicles were sold in this class over the six months. And that’s down from 38,560 in 2018.
Rumours are swirling around at the moment, suggesting Nissan is set to open the order book for its next-generation Z sports car, often dubbed as the ‘400Z’, on November 15. The new model has so far only been shown in “close-to-final” prototype form.
The news comes from a purported staff member at Nissan that apparently let slip that the replacement for the 370Z will be available for pre-order from mid November. The info was posted to a forum dedicated to the new Nissan Z, called
If the proposed timeline turns out to be accurate, it seems likely that the first deliveries of the upcoming Z will take place some time in 2022, with specs and features expected to be confirmed in the lead up to reservations formally opening.
Toyota is apparently planning a hot hatch GR version of its Corolla, which is set to adopt an enhanced version of the GR Yaris’s 1.6 turbo engine. This would mean a new world record for a mass-production three-cylinder.
It couldn’t come soon enough, really. Toyota has been missing from the hot hatch segment since pretty much forever. And now with so many contenders in this space, with everything from the Hyundai i30 N, Renault Megane RS, and Honda Civic Type R, it seems unusual that Toyota isn’t already here.
The GR Yaris does fill some of the void, though. However, it is a project which ties in with the company’s efforts in WRC, with the Yaris-based rally car and whatnot. According to reports though there is a GR Corolla coming soon, with an unveiling said to be planned for the second half of this year.
