The video is difficult to watch.  Sophie, an 88-year-old cancer survivor and great grandmother, screams out in pain as doctors remove portions of her scalp.  The procedure, known as debridement, was necessary because of an infection during her stay as a resident at Addison Pointe, a nursing home in Chesterton. It adds protections for nursing homes, hospitals and other medical providers from lawsuits unless gross negligence or willful misconduct can be proven. Ashley Hadler is a trial lawyer and represents clients looking to take legal action against nursing homes. She said changes in the Senate did improve the bill, but it is still too broad. “It still will allow attorneys to argue that facilities are immune from claims that have nothing to do with coronavirus,” said Hadler. “It still allows bad actors to get away with understaffing or get away with not providing patient care under the guise of responding to COVID-19. And that s a problem.”

Coronavirus: Indiana To Receive More Vaccine Doses, Holcomb Relaxes Restrictions

Gov. Eric Holcomb is relaxing COVID-19 restrictions as the number of Hoosiers testing positive and hospitalized with the virus trends down. Beginning next week, the state will continue to use its color-coded, county map to determine gathering restrictions. But it will eliminate 25-person gathering limits in red counties and 50-person limits in orange counties (the two colors indicating the worst amount of spread). Instead, Holcomb said gatherings in red and orange counties can be up to 25 percent of the facility’s capacity. Indiana businesses and institutions are one step closer to being protected from COVID-19 lawsuits. A House committee passed the bill but some still worry the protections go too far.
